About SanMingZhi
Sanmingzhi means “Sandwich” or “Sandwiched”. It’s the Chinese Pinyin translation based on the pronunciation of Sandwich. This word itself poses a mixed status: a foreign daily food in China is exotic, yet the Chinese who embrace or live in overseas cultures are also sandwiched, in today’s increasing divided situations in the East and West.
And that’s why this platform was once called “SandwiChina”, a made-up word by the founder Zixin Li . But now we have returned to using SanMingZhi (三明治), as a matter of fact that the word represents the fusion of influences from both East and West, and the transformation alongside its global journey.
Since 2011, SanMingZhi has been a nonfiction writing platform that encourages Chinese people to write their personal stories, in both Chinese and English. We assist in transforming these stories into published books, curated art exhibitions, podcasts, and other multidisciplinary projects.
SanMingZhi also serves as a bridge between the Chinese and English literary worlds, introducing the finest Chinese writings to English-speaking audiences while bringing English literature about contemporary China to Chinese readers. On this website, you’ll find interviews with notable and emerging contemporary Chinese writers, as well as stories from Chinese people living around the world.
